I will not be toppled!

One day soon 14th Street will be like any other nice, fun neighborhood.  And it's definitely come a long way.  But there are growing pains.

This is the greatest product I've seen in a while.  In fact, I think I was complaining about how I wish I had something like this the other day.  The only thing it could use is maybe a standalone GPS mode without having to go into lost mode.  But the community thing might more than make up for that.  (Also, I imagine having to transmit a WiFi signal would be most costly and bulky than communicating via bluetooth (or whatever it uses) to other devices.)  Never lose your keys again!

Here is an interesting article about being a criminal defense lawyer.  I tried to use it to justify my own practice, but it didn't work.

Here is your Community update.

Responses:

2. There was a time when most people thought that drugs would destroy society, but I think the real issue with drugs is the societal ramifications of many anti-drug efforts.  Drugs are bad, but the way we've responded to them is worse.

3. I'm happy to be in the 4%.

5. Isn't it easier just to have a spam email account?

I don't like this game anymore.

I sent this article to you earlier via e-mail, but in case it came from "no reply" again, here it is.  I enjoy joking about how acting superstars who do terrible movies must have lots of gambling debt, but then again, if someone asked you to play Amber Heard's part in Drive Angry for $1 million (I don't know what she got paid, but I assume it was plenty) - or better yet, Nic Cage's part for $10 million - and the kicker was that you could keep doing that as often as you wanted and have fun with it, wouldn't you?  I think I might.

Apparently this is happening.  How long before it loses steam?  I give it another month.

What an interesting idea.  I have not read the full article yet, but I will.

Here's my wanderlust article.

Reading the Washington Post...

Since we're going to be columnists, we might as well see what our future co-workers are up to.

This article talks about the problems with the food scene in DC.  I think the problem is summed up in the penultimate paragraph: the issue is with demand.

And this article talks about the growing beer scene in DC.  I think the biggest takehome is that we should spend more time on H St and U St and in ChurchKey

What do you think of thisHere is one response.

What do you think of these?  Can we do hot or not? :)

We should have a Washington Post column.

The fact that we are on the same level as Tom Sietsma makes me think that we're pretty awesome.

This is similar to my take on the whole George Zimmerman thing.

The Baby Boomers are ruining everything.

Responses:

1. There is no way I'm responding to this. :)

3. I actually love peach ice cream.

6. All of those places look fantastic.

i think this book is interesting

i don't know why people don't like snooki

yum? i mean, i don't automatically assume combining two of your favorite things equals a third favorite thing. fruit ice creams were never a thing for me. i was more into sorbet.

Maybe We Should Start Watching Girls

If you were looking forward to season 5 of Community, this is a bit of bad news.

Maybe Costco is the superior savings club megastore... or maybe not!  Put it to the test!

Did Hollingsworth ask you any of these questions?

What do you think of this recipe for your party?  Also, I post this only to suggest that you may consider guacamole at your party, but the idea might be too sacreligious.

This aspect of the Jason Collins story is a little tragic.  I mean, it's good that they didn't walk down the aisle, say I do, have kids, and end up getting divorced later.  But it seems like so much of the emphasis is placed on the public announcement, and not nearly enough goes on what's really important, which is the personal relationships we have with our loved ones.  That said, I imagine that having the conversation with her was much harder for Jason Collins than giving the interview.

Yay - another boycott!  I actually do want to see this movie, though.

The Charlottesville grocery store scene is getting ready to get a lot more monopolistic.

On the one hand, talking about a girl's age is almost always a no-no.  On the other hand, 1) pretty much all of these applied to me and 2) there are two uses of The O.C.

In exchange for my potential crime above, I've decided I'm not buying you a "Fuck My Liver" flask for your 30th birthday.  Instead, I'm buying you this.  I hope you don't mind that I've ruined the surprise.

I Wanna Go!

After the success of our first mini-golf outing, I figured you might want some revenge.  How about this: let's go here, and the loser pays for dinner here.

Apparently the New York Times has discovered Virginia wine country.  In spite of that, I thought I should mention that this is now available again.  (I keep forgetting to buy it.)

I've wanted to go here for a long time, but maybe not so much after this.

This could be that wonderful combination of fun and affordable.

Is this the real reason you don't want to go biking with me? :P

Responses:

1. That sounded painful.  Lawrence did not pull any punches.

2. Pretty cool.  I'd want to see them in person.

3. I've heard other versions of this idea to control spending by eliminating impulse buying.  But you're not really an impulse buyer, are you?

5. "Even though you say you didn't mean what I think you meant, what I think you meant is a possible interpretation of what you said, and I think the line of thinking that led you to think what you think is flawed, so I am going to disregard what you say you meant and hold you accountable for both what I think you meant as well as the intent that I think you had behind what you meant."  I hate when people do this to me (it happens more than I prefer, and it often comes from people who should know me pretty well), so in my humble opinion, Noah Berlatsky and The Atlantic can go straight to hell.

6. Would you like to come and look at the glowing Washington Monument with me tonight after work?

7. That's very interesting.  Do I do them?

R2R:

2. They are on my DVR - I've recorded them in reruns.

4. Not even Monsters University?  I've always thought that Pixar movies look great in theaters.

I think you still have to respond to Other Things to Watch, but I suspect that you won't until you can watch the links at home. :)

highly anticipated responses

we're not literate

1. the test is only hard because it's so badly written.
2. dc is definitely not snobby, especially compared to new york. i've never heard anyone in dc say - oh, well that's a dc thing and they don't have that in other cities. or dc is the best city. you hear that all the time in new york.
3. i don't understand why we can't fix this student loan problem. i think everyone's on the same page here except universities and i don't think universities have so much lobbying clout. also, why don't universities just charge higher tuition without amping up on the admin personnel? why do they have to spend their money there? at least if you built a better gym, you could showcase that on your tour. but having more admin personnel raises costs and is not something that anyone would find attractive when picking a school. (granted, hiring personnel is cheaper than building a building, but still). you can still charge higher tuition without hiring more personnel.
4. that GWB article was really nice.
5. i thought food network star was a pretty entertaining show - i only watched half of one episode. but i liked watching the business side of things. unfortunately, if that's where guy fieri is from, i'm not the biggest fan (tho my mom loves diners, dives and drive-ins.) the cooking channel is where it's at.
6. yay redskins!

what to watch
1. ooh i really liked geoffrey arend in 500 days - he's also joan harris' husband, apparently.
2. how have i missed this?!?1?!
3. donald glover is greatness.
4. i'm not sure any of those movies really need to be see in the theatre.

back on the board

cville is doing date lab too. it's a worse format but this date is hilarious.

because you like maps

this is kinda what i'm trying to do with my budget

Other Things to Watch

I really liked this commercial for Playstation.

It's just not about the nail.  As much as we've talked about this, it does bear repeating, especially in humorous applications that will stay in my mind.

Even Satanists have a line they won't cross.

There aren't enough cute bunnies on this blog.

Here is the trailer for Planes.

I've told you about one of my pet peeves being people recording live events instead of just experiencing them.  Two examples:

1. At the fireworks (I was out on my bike and stopped to watch them on the Key Bridge), over half of the people around me had their smartphones out for either pictures or videos.  They watched the whole show through the image on their smartphones instead of directly.

2. I watched the ladies' Wimbledon final this morning, and Marion Bartoli won.  Her dad was in the stands.  Of course, this match and the trophy presentation is being broadcast on ESPN, BBC, and some channel in his home country of France, but he still insisted on whipping his smartphone out to record his daughter's heartfelt remarks to the world and to him upon winning.  Couldn't he just DVR the thing and look at his daughter in the face while she was celebrating her championship victory?

I don't think I'm right and everyone else is wrong (well, no more than usual), but I think I just don't understand it.  I value taking pictures and memorializing great moments or small moments or what have you, but many people today seem to have the idea that they should personally record everything, post it to the internet for all (or no one) to see, and create their identity that way.  This seems tiring to me.  But maybe I'm just old when it comes to social media.

I could always use more pictures of you, though. :)

We're carrying the economy today.

The title has nothing to do with the links, but this is what I have discovered.  But on the bright side, there are rewards for us soon!  For you, for example, there are these links!

Of course Bobby Flay's kitchen is the bomb.  Also, I dream of being the guy to whose house everyone wants to go for Thanksgiving.

A judge decided that the Situation's situation was without legal merit, leaving the Situation with a situation since he waited too long to trademark the situation.

I'm going home to stretch so I can do this.

Here is some more RGIII stuff that I'm sure you'll eat right up. :)

This is what I'm going to do if I ever get sick of being a lawyer.  Also, embarrassment alert: I watched this movie on TV and kinda enjoyed the bicycle chase scenes.

What to Watch... or This is Five

I saw a preview for this movie while watching Showtime (it came on after Mean Girls, which makes sense).  It also has Alison Brie in it.

American Ninja Warrior already started!  The first show was on July 1, so there have only been one or two episodes, but both of them are available On Demand.

One thing McKernan told me about Girls is that season 2 features Donald Glover as a black Republican.  I don't really know what to do with this information.  Also, from what I can tell, Girls and American Ninja Warrior are the only shows we currently have - other than whatever is left of Modern Family.

This is the End was well received by critics and viewers alike.  By the way, so were Monsters University and the Kevin Hart movie.

We're not literate.

In Louisiana in 1964, this would have stood between us and our local polling place.  This test is freaking hard.

I never got this vibe from DC.

Here is an interesting article about the problems with student loans.

And now here's George W. Bush with how to get ready for the 4th of July.

This article - and the show described therein - sums up why I can't really watch Food Network anymore.

And here is your Redskins preview.

Preparation for King's Dominion (or Busch Gardens)

The Washington Post has us covered.  My favorite part is the suggestion that closing one's eyes on the Griffon feels like sitting in a rocking chair.  I call shenanigans on that one.

Here are some quirky car facts for the drive there.  This also doubles as my bear-related post, but you'll have to figure out why.

I think this would be a lot of fun to play in - more or less fun than a roller coaster?  Ok, I'm running out of steam on the theme of this particular post.  Let's change the subject to something more comfortable...

This looks like a solid happy hour option in your (work) neighborhood. :)

LaCroixGate - an Update

Apparently there is now an investigation into the ABC officer's massive overreaction without nearly enough reasonable suspicion.  With that in mind, the excerpts from the ABC statement make me think they are unapologetic.

What do you think of running skirts?

I think I understand now - not necessarily because of the presence or absence of this law, but rather from the common motivation and cultural underpinnings of it.

Apparently there is a new rule on how plus ones for weddings work.

Monster's University won the weekend, but The Heat beat White House Down.
